Prima Games ist eine Verlagsgesellschaft in den Vereinigten Staaten, die früher Herausgeber verschiedener Spieleberater für Videospiele und Tabletop-Spiele war. Der Verlag wurde Anfang 2022 von der Gamurs Group übernommen und ist seitdem deren Tochtergesellschaft.[2]
Im Zusammenhang mit Pokémon veröffentlichte Prima Games unter dem Titel Prima's Official Strategy Guides Spieleberater für Spiele der Pokémon-Hauptreihe und die meisten wichtigen Spin-offs. Diese waren bereits seit Veröffentlichung des ersten Spieleberaters Pokémon Red and Blue: Prima's Official Strategy Guide offiziell von Nintendo lizensiert und erschienen seither ausschließlich auf englisch und in Nordamerika. Prima Games stellte 2020 den physischen Druck aller Magazine und damit auch die Pokémon-Spieleberater ein.
Geschichte
Prima Publishing war zunächst ein kleiner Verlag, der in einem Heimbüro in Roseville, Kalifornien arbeitete. Sein Besitzer Ben Dominitz nahm 1990 den Autor Rusel DeMaria unter Vertrag, um ein Videospiel-Strategiehandbuch herauszugeben, das zunächst „The Secrets of the Games“ hieß. Zu dieser Zeit war DeMaria Chefredakteur der Zeitschrift PC Games und Mitarbeiter der GamePro.
Im Jahr 2005 führte Prima den elektronischen Vertrieb von Spielehandbüchern ein.
Prima Games ging 2007 eine Partnerschaft mit Nintendo ein und veröffentlichte mehrere offizielle Spielführer, unter anderem für Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2 und Super Mario Odyssey. Sie enthielten Gameplay-Tipps und Komplettlösungen. Einige dieser Bücher enthielten noch nicht zuvor gezeigte Artworks und Konzeptzeichnungen.
Ab 2010 verkaufte Prima Games ihre Spieleberater bei Steam.
Der ehemalige Besitzer von Prima Games, Penguin Random House, kündigte Ende 2018 an, dass Prima Games im zweiten Quartal 2019 geschlossen werden solle. Stattdessen wurde wurde der Verlag im Frühjahr 2019 von Asteri Holdings übernommen, welche kurz darauf den Druck physischer Magazine vollständig einstellte. Die Gesellschaft wurde Anfang 2022 von der Gamurs Group gekauft.
